Comparing the 600 hp twin turbo V12 BMW M760Li to the new Porsche Panamera Turbo

Autocar decided to compare the BMW 760li and the new Panamera Turbo for some reason. Just because they are big, heavy, and have four doors does not mean they are in the same class. The Panamera should be going up against the BMW M5.

Speaking of big and heavy though look at what these things weigh. The Panamera is lighter but hardly light at 4398 pounds. The M760Li xDrive comes in at a whopping 4806 pounds.

The Panamera is lighter but also far more about the driving experience. It handles better, is sharper, and overall just is more fun to drive. No real surprise there. The 760Li is just a luxurious and fast tank.

No trap speeds because the British don't know what those are apparently. The Panamera Turbo is the quicker car but the M760Li is no slouch.

The new F90 M5 should handle the Panamera Turbo quite easily considering the new Mercedes-AMG W213 E63 S has no trouble with it.

Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to compare the "executive" model of the Panamera? I mean, it is the long wheelbase 7-series.

(Unless this is the executive model and I just stopped listening/caring?)

Considering Porsche doesn't have a bigger or more luxurious sedan that would definitely make the most sense.

Not bad for two big boats. Love the spacious 7 Series. Wish they made a more \\M ish 7series

More than the M760? What else would they need to do?

I mean ideally they would make it lighter and RWD with a manual option but that isn't M anymore these day. An M car just equals horsepower.

Natural Aspiration! I know everyone is getting away from it, but nothing like the sound of the S85 with some Eisenman exhaust. Would love to see a longer stroke on the 5.0 V10 to make a more square bore to aid in that low end torque but still rev to 9k. I obviously own one and had twins put on it just for the heck of it, but I loved it N/A.

I'm a big ford fanboy, and I can't stand the 5.0 because of the dang stroke. It's a simple 4.6 bored out with better heads. Wished they would keep things square like the 5.8 (5.4 stroke, 5.0 bore). More area under the curve.

I agree but NA M is dead.

Frankly, Ford has some awesome NA motors these days.

I work for ford and I agree, NA is pretty much dead. The 5.0 makes great numbers up high, but frankly in a truck, its about useless. I own 5.0, 5.4, 5.8 and the 5.0 is by far the worst truck engine. I mean I have about 35k in the 5.4 engine and supporting mods to make huge power, but I wish the management would cast some coyote heads for the 4.6/5.4 mods. Won't be long before electronic/magnetic timing components (lol don't ask how I know).

My favorite BMW motors;
1) S85
2) Any inline 6 with twins is amazing. Love the powerband and reliability as well.
and the list goes on.

I am one of the old school guys who still runs compound boost (twins with a charger).

I think you mean twincharging. Compound boost is when one turbo feeds another turbo.

I guess you can call it that, but same concept. The twins feed the charger and the charger "compounds and compresses the boost from the turbos". Same concept as one turbo feeding the other to in essence compound the boost.

I don't think blowers will be making a comeback unless they are in high dollar performance vehicles. Not something they sell 800,000 units a year. Turbos are "more efficient" or so management tell us math guys. So we stick with their wants and needs.

Torque is amazing. HP does level out around 850 though

I've asked companies that produce blowers and they are not concerned at all about turbos.

Magnusson in particular sees a very healthy market for superchargers and Eaton supplies many OEM's.

What does it put down?

Last dyno on C16 with no NO2 was 854 hp/ 1321 tq only reeving to 6200.

Big fan of roots type blowers since I want all the pressure in the manifold and not built up in the charger like a twin screw.
