Shocker! Volkswagen execs knew about diesel emissions cheating - Audi R&D chief Ulrich Hackenberg steps down
Pick your jaw up from the floor! In the most non-surprising story regarding the Volkswagen diesel fiasco German newspaper Bild am Sonntag reports that Volkswagen executives including the recently deposed CEO Martin Winterkorn knew all about the diesel emissions cheating.
That is a bit different from the rhetoric Winterkorn spewed earlier this year that he needed to find out what happened and that it was probably the work of some rogue engineers. This whole thing started at the top. Anything else that was stated was from executives simply covering their own behinds in a vain effort to not lose their jobs. Kind of pathetic, right?
We can all basically surmise what happened. Engineers reported the cars would not pass the test as they sat and those at the top told them to figure out how to make them pass. What followed was a software solution to pass the emissions tests.
The report from Bild am Sonntag states cheating did not stop at emissions but that certain cars did not meet the Volkswagen fuel economy figures. It looks like cheating was rampant at Volkswagen in more ways than one.
Volkswagen has yet to comment on this report and we doubt the executives being forced out and stepping down will comment due to self-incrimination. Speaking of which, Audi's R&D head Ulrich Hackenberg announced his resignation. Stefan Knirsch will move up from Audi's powertrain department to take his place.
The executive shuffling continues.

Honestly I wouldn't even care if I had a diesel VW that emitted more emissions and cheated to pass a test. As long as it got the fuel mileage as advertised...f*ck it.
I would be more pissed if I was a Kia or Hyundai owner, when they lied about fuel economy.
