Is Audi really going to use the Porsche 718 Boxster platform to create an R6 sports car?
The Audi R8 is basically just a reskinned Lamborghini Huracan. It uses the same chassis, the same engine, the same transmission, and is basically just the same thing with different styling and an Audi badge. The idea works and the question is will Audi now recycle the 718 Boxster for an Audi R6 sports car?
Audi intends to if you believe the Germans at Autobild. Keep in mind, they are not above creating renders and making up stories to sell magazines and get hits.
Apparently the R6 already has a internal codename which is PO455. The car would obviously slot in between the TT and the R8.
It would also have all wheel drive which means there would be a significant point of differentiation between it and the Boxster. That also means this is unlikely to happen as VW has a cash flow problem at the moment with a lot of uncertainty regarding the diesel scandal. It is difficult to imagine the project getting the green light with the platform needing a significant amount of re-engineering to accommodate a Quattro drivetrain.
It sure is fun to dream about what Audi could come up with though.
